Universal Studios Japan upgrades 'Harry Potter' area

Universal Studios Japan opened new attractions based on the "Harry Potter" film franchise on Wednesday, aiming to log another year of record traffic. Visitors purchasing "magic wands" now can simulate spell-casting at certain sites in the Osaka park's Harry Potter-themed area, such as by calling forth fire or snow with specific phrases and wand movements.

And a new show features students from the wizardry school where the series is set. At the launch ceremony Tuesday evening, a car floated in the air just like in one of the movies when around 100 invited guests cast a spell. Harry Potter is a series of seven novels written by British author J. K. Rowling. The novels chronicle the life of a young wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The main story arc concerns Harry's struggle against Lord Voldemort, the Dark wizard who intends to become immortal, overthrow the Ministry of Magic, subjugate non-magic people and destroy anyone who stands in his way.
