One of the largest train museums in Japan will open in Kyoto on April 29, West Japan Railway Co., or JR West, announced Wednesday.The Kyoto Railway Museum, being developed on a 30,000-square-meter site, will exhibit a total of 53 locomotives and train cars it inherited from the already-closed Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum at the same location and the Modern Transportation Museum in Osaka, also closed.
Among the main features of the new museum are a roundhouse and a turntable for steam locomotives, both of which were central features of the Umekoji museum, and the old Nijo Station building, which was known as the oldest wooden depot in service in the country.The railway museum will be open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day except Wednesday and during the New Year's holidays. Admission fees are 1,200 yen for nonstudent adults, 1,000 yen for high school and university students, 500 yen for younger students and 100 yen for preschool children aged 3 or older.
