Saitama rice paddy art world's largest

A large artwork on a rice paddy using seven kinds of rice plants of varying colors, including green and black, in Gyoda, Saitama Prefecture, has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's largest rice field mosaic.

In the paddy, which is 165 meters wide and 180 meters long at its longest edge, the plants were planted in such a way as to create a picture of a boy in a spacesuit and a girl in ancient clothing, titled "Mirai e tsunagu inishie no kiseki" (Trajectory from ancient times to the future). The Committee for Promotion of Rice Cropping Experience through Rice Field Art, comprising of the municipal government and local farmers, began annual attempts at rice paddy art in 2008. Though they first applied for the Guinness World Record two years ago, their work was not recognized as a record at that time because the rice plants' growth was insufficient.
