Flames of giant torches have lighted up a shrine and its vicinity at the foot of Mount Fuji in an annual festival to bid farewell to the summer climbing season.The lighting of the torches on Wednesday night was a key feature of the 2-day Yoshida Fire Festival under way at Fuji-Yoshida City, Yamanashi Prefecture, in central Japan.

Each torch is 3 meters tall. About 80 torches were lit along a 3-kilometer stretch, with their flames flickering against the surrounding darkness.
