Today~ Hiroshima marks 70th anniversary of atomic bombing


Hiroshima on Thursday marks the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the city. It will pay respect to the victims and send the world the message that it's determined to work hard for global peace.An annual ceremony is to be held at Peace Memorial Park. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and representatives from a record 100 countries will take part.




A list of 297,684 victims of the bombing will be placed inside a cenotaph. The list includes the names of 5,359 people who died or were confirmed to have died in the past year as a result of the bombing. Participants will offer a silent prayer at 8:15 AM, the exact time the atomic bomb was dropped on August 6th, 1945.

Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui will read out a peace declaration. He is expected to call nuclear weapons the "absolute evil."Matsui also plans to express Hiroshima's resolve to do everything in its power to accelerate the international trend toward negotiations for a nuclear weapons convention.
